Sardinia hike 2, day 4. To Cala Goloritze.

Hey all,

Cracker of a day. Started off a bit iffy with grizzly weather, spitting occasionally, looked like it was about to break into a full downpour. Persisted though, walking past some hole which goes vertically down for 270 metres or something, which is impressive, but from the viewing platform just looks like a hole.

There was a cafe/camping ground place at the start of the walk today which the guidebook did not mention, possibly because the guy who seemed to be running it was so sullen, so I shared the walk down with a heap of day trippers – by the time I got to the beach the rain had started up, and everyone was huddled under rocks, with the one decent cave being taken up by the same school group I saw a couple of days ago. But you could see the good weather slowly heading towards the beach – the heavy clouds were all going away from us. By the time I had cooked lunch the sun had come out – had a longish swim, coffee, cigar, then got changed and started to head back up.

There is this truly amazing spire here near the beach – a massive spike pointing to the heavens. Found a place on the way back up where I could camp – you are not supposed to but I don't reckon anyone will be looking for me here – the coolest hammock camp yet – see the photo. And the views were spectacular – had my very last cigar, wishing I had kept the remaining Cuban till now – and watched three rock climbers I had seen before slowly ascend the spire, waiting for the money shot of a human silhouette against the sky – which I finally got, although it was pushing my camera to its limits. Fantastic place to be camping in a hammock – and much preferable to giving the sullen individual at the top of this canyon any money to camp in what is, after all, a car park.

Anyway, a bit of wind – hoping it does not pick up too much cause really don't want to be worried about the ropes giving way tonight – lying here at the moment listening to the occasional wild goat bleating somewhere on the cliffs – having had a cup of very sweet tea while I watched the three climbers abseil back down again.

Out of cigars :( but on the plus side the cheap as chips Italian cigars that are everywhere here were a pleasant surprise – if they had been as appalling as those cheap Dutch things you can buy then I would have thrown the packet out after one or two puffs – but they weren't half bad. And only 5 EU for a packet of 5, which is what you get in a country where the women are women, the men are gangsters, and the government is not a Nanny Overlord because it is run by the aforementioned men.

Cool day. Sneezing for the first half of the day but it seems to have got better. Foot still a problem but am glad I did my best to ignore it – would have been a shame to miss all this.

Photos. 1. A big hole in the ground. 2. Bottom centre of shot: a long way to go. 3. This arch thing near the beach. 4. After the swim. 5. More blue. 6. The spire again. 7. Loving the hammock. 8. Money shot. If you click on the photo and enlarge it you will see a bloke standing right on the very top.

Cheers, B.

PS – Love love love this little laptop. Going to indulge in an entire post on it at some point. Fair warning...
